personality
Lauralee grew up in Lakefield, a small rural town in Southern Ontario. She played a variety of sports throughout high school including golf, badminton, baseball, basketball, track and field, lacrosse and volleyball. Lauralee was fortunate to never experience a sports injury that required her to receive the help of a physiotherapist. However, she did become aware of the aches and pains, and other injuries that often plagued her parents and grandparents. These injuries meant Lauralee’s dad was not able to throw a baseball around with her in the backyard, and her grandparents could not accompany her to the zoo or sporting events.
Once Lauralee found out there was a profession that could help people who were in similar situations as her family, she knew it was a career she wanted to pursue. She wanted to give people an opportunity to improve their quality of life and be able to participate in the small but important aspects of life that can easily be taken away by pain and injury. Nothing makes Lauralee happier than when her clients tell her they were able to get back to a hobby or activity that they love, all because they decided to invest in themselves and pursue physiotherapy.
- Favorite books – I wasn’t sure if I could get into the ACOTAR series, but I’ve been blown away by the character and world building in those books. Also anything by Ruth Ware or Lisa Jewel. My favourite books to read on vacation are by Emily Henry who writes rom coms
- Favorite Music – hard rock, specifically from the early 2000s
- Movies he/she loves – Interstellar is her all time favourite movie.
- Favorite sports/activities – Beach volleyball, golf, darts, dog agility, skiing, pickleball
- Physio nickname – Laur or Double L
- What her physio assistants say about her – Lauralee has fun and unique names for her exercises that make them easy to remember and exciting to learn!
- Clinical Pet Peeve – clients being on their phones and not taking the any time for themselves during their appointments. She loves seeing people shut their eyes and just relax at the beginning or end of their physio sessions
- What was your first car? Her first car is her current car, a Kia Soul, AKA the hamster car.
- Do you play board games? Which ones? The Quacks of Quedlinburg – we can’t explain it, you just have to trust us that it’s great… and maybe ask her about it.
- Community connections – Deep connections in Okotoks living less than 5 minutes or 1.5 songs away from the clinic
edge
Lauralee received her Bachelor of Science Honours in Kinesiology from Queen’s University in 2017. Alongside her undergraduate degree she also completed a mini stream specializing in aging and disability by taking additional training and courses. Lauralee then moved to London Ontario where she completed her Masters of Physical Therapy. Once completing her Master’s, Lauralee moved closer to home and started her physiotherapy career in Peterborough, Ontario. After working for 10 months, Lauralee completed McMaster University’s Contemporary Medical Acupuncture Program, and incorporated acupuncture into her daily practice as a physiotherapist. In 2021, Lauralee moved to Alberta with her husband, who was initially from Calgary. They settled in Okotoks as they were wanting to put down roots in a town much quieter and smaller than Calgary.
Lauralee had reached out to Momentum Physical Therapy and Sports Rehab, before she made the move to Alberta and excitedly started the next chapter of her career there. She enjoyed working in a more open environment alongside more physiotherapists and assistants than what she experienced in Ontario. Lauralee soon realized that IMS was a much more popular form of needling than acupuncture out west, and quickly completed her On Point IMS level 1 and 2 needling courses. At the same time she completed Complete Concussion Management’s Training Course, allowing her to work with clients who had sustained concussions, often working with both athletes, and MVA clients. Her favourite part of physiotherapy at Leading Edge in Okotoks is the variety of clientele that she gets to work with everyday, and the continued opportunities for professional development and new rehab technology offered at Leading Edge.
