personality

After a brief and uninspiring stint in accounting—mostly spent sleeping through lectures—this physiotherapist found their true calling through personal experience. Years of hockey-related injuries gave him firsthand insight into the frustration and pain that come with physical setbacks, and that long “injury rap sheet” became the foundation for a career built on empathy and problem-solving. Drawn to manual therapy, IMS, and the challenge of treating stubborn issues that others couldn’t resolve, he brings a relentless curiosity and a genuine desire to help. Outside the clinic, he’s all about the Okanagan lifestyle—wakesurfing, snowboarding, skiing, paddleboarding, camping, hiking, biking, and spending time with family. Inspired by those who rise above stereotypes and setbacks, Ryan is fueled by the success of others and is known for his infectious positivity. If you walk into a session with him, one thing’s for sure: you’ll leave with a smile—whether you planned to or not.

  • Favorite books –  Any book that is an e-book. I cant stay awake long enough to get through 5 pages and if I do, I need to re-read 3 pages on the next attempt
  • Favorite Music – 90’s Grunge, 90’s Rap, and Alternative Rock and of course Rock’n’Roll
  • Movies he/she loves – Tommy Boy, Goodfellas, Bond and Star Wars (but not the Jar Jar Binks Movies)
  • Favorite sports/activities – Hockey, Wakesurfing, Snowboarding, Skiing, Biking, Hiking and Camping.
  • Physio nickname – Bucky or Buck… this isn’t just a physio nickname, he is more likely to respond to this than his actual name
  • What was your favorite sitcom growing up? Married with Children
  • If you could have one superhero power, what would it be? I would be able to teleport, because xray vision is creepy.
  • Something you may not know about him/her – biggest guilty pleasure is ketchup
  • Superhuman Talent– He has monkey toes that can grasp anything, they are basically another set of hands
  • Would you rather be attacked by a big bear or a swarm of bees? BEAR for sure, as Tommy boy said “BEES, BEES , Save yourself, Your firearms are useless against them!”
  • Community connections –From aunts and uncles to friends kids who also call Ryan uncle, it is pretty hard not to find someone in Kelowna Ryan doesn’t know

edge

Ryan graduated from the University of Alberta with his Masters in Physiotherapy in 2006. He completed his Bachelor of Science degree at the University of Lethbridge in 2004 with a major in Exercise Science. Ryan played junior hockey for the Calgary Royals in the Alberta Junior Hockey League for three years after which his hockey career continued with a NCAA Division 1 hockey scholarship to Bemidji State University in Minnesota. Unfortunately, his NCAA career was cut short by injuries, luckily though this long list of injuries led him to a career in Physiotherapy. He was able to have surgery and rehabilitate enough to return to the University of Lethbridge to play for the Pronghorns in the CIS.

Ryan has been practicing in the Okanagan since 2007. He joins us at Leading Edge Physiotherapy after successfully owning and operating Kelowna Manual Therapy Centre.

He enjoys helping clients return to their desired activity. He offers a comprehensive treatment involving manual and exercise therapy for all musculoskeletal disorders whether they are caused by trauma, work or sport. With his certifications in acupuncture from the CAFCI, as well as his certification in Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), Ryan offers multiple needling techniques as part of his physiotherapy services. He is also a provider of DONJOY custom knee braces. Ryan has completed numerous post-graduate courses in manual therapy and other techniques that will help you on your journey to recover. Ryan is continuing daily to increase his repertoire in order to “fix the one’s that aren’t going to get better on their own.”
