Prostate Cancer and Early Detection: Why Knowing Is Always Better Than Not Knowing

Al Hamilton and the Prostate Cancer Centre

As a physiotherapist, my work on Life Shouldn’t Hurt has always been centered on helping people move past pain so they can truly enjoy their lives. But this episode hits exceptionally close to home for me. Prostate cancer took my dad when he was just 62 years old, after a stage 4 diagnosis at age 50 revealed a slow-growing disease that had likely started in his 30s. That personal loss shaped my deep conviction that knowing is always better than not knowing, and early detection can completely rewrite a family’s future.

In this episode, co-host Anita Cassidy and I sit down with two extraordinary champions for men’s health: Edmonton Oilers hockey legend Al Hamilton and Jeff Davison, CEO of Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre. Together, we confront the silent reality of prostate cancer—a disease that will affect 1 in 6 Alberta men (compared to 1 in 8 nationally) and often shows zero symptoms until it is dangerously advanced.

Compelling Stories & Emotional Resonance

A powerful conversation of raw vulnerability and practical wisdom

Al Hamilton’s Grit & Resilience

After enduring over 30 surgeries during 14 years in professional hockey, Al faced his most defining battle when diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 62. Now turning 80, Al shares how active surveillance and early detection saved his life—and why he now travels with the Man Van mobile clinic to help other men put aside stoicism and get tested.

Jeff Davison & Innovation in Care

Jeff brings both executive leadership and personal emotion, sharing how his own father—a retired firefighter who volunteered to drive the Man Van—decided to get tested on a whim, caught his high PSA levels early, and became cancer-free within months. Jeff also highlights how Calgary’s Prostate Cancer Centre is revolutionizing care by reducing biopsy wait times to just 14 to 21 days (compared to up to 290 days in Edmonton) through centralized, one-stop care and dedicated nurse navigators.

“Men, get after it before it gets after you.”

Actionable Takeaways & Practical Wisdom

Listeners can take away several simple, life-saving steps right away:

  • Get Tested Early: A simple PSA blood test starting in your 40s (if you have a family history) or 50s provides vital baseline information long before symptoms appear. As Al so memorably puts it: “Men, get after it before it gets after you.”
  • Overcome Healthcare Avoidance: Too many men wait until a health issue is right in their face or rely on “Dr. Google,” which only fuels anxiety. Proactive testing removes fear and gives you back control over your health options.
  • Take Advantage of Prehab & Pelvic Health: Newer programs like pre-surgical physical conditioning (prehab) help men get healthier before treatment, leading to faster recovery times, fewer emergency room visits, and better quality of life regarding side effects.
  • Connect with Your Loved Ones: Beyond medical advice, we share a simple reminder to use hands-free driving time to phone your parents or loved ones—because staying connected is an essential part of health and healing.
