personality

Ryan was always drawn to doing something in the medical field, originally wanting to become a pediatrician to help children. As he went through university, he was drawn to the physiotherapy profession based on a love for anatomy, physiology and the dynamics of human movement. Most important, a love of helping people. Fortunately for us he chose physiotherapy over medicine, as he felt there would be more time with patients, as well as a larger role in their recovery. It didn’t hurt that he’s obsessed with sports. Ryan loves to hangout with friends and family, snowboard, play hockey, golf, listen to music (a true fit with Grant and the team… but his significant other is another story) and spending time maintaining his yard and home. Ryan is inspired by the patients he sees every day. He draws his strength even more inspiration from family and friends who are working to conquer their own health challenges whilst maintaining a positive attitude on life (he says you know who you are).

  • Favorite book –  The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg
  • Only 1 Album for life what would it be? – his mom would be disappointed but to Ryan there is no bigger classic than Dr. Dre’s album 2001. (This album will also never be played in our clinic).
  • Movies he loves – Goodfellas or Godfather I/II
  • Favorite activities – Hockey, snowboarding, golf and watching football, basketball… ok – watching any sports.
  • Pet Peeves at the clinic – when bad music is played. Have to put an end to it right away.
  • Physio nickname – we haven’t quite pegged him with one yet but we are taking suggestions.
  • What the staff say about him “dude’s like a hurricane running through the clinic with towels and items left in his wake.  Sometimes a little too goofy for his own good.”
  • Did you know? at one point in his life (we won’t say when) he had frosted tips. He gave the NSYNC boys a run for their money. His last name also contains every letter of the alphabet
  • Super human trait – he holds the ability to work during the day as a physio, and still make it to his night job as his alter ego “Sam Gagner.”
  • Irrational Fears – he is absolutely terrified of mice – out of fear he knows just about every fact that one would ever need to know about mice.
  • Favourite Holiday – Christmas for sure – fire up the live Douglas Fir tree in the living room with some candy cane hot chocolate and get some classic Paul McCartney christmas jams bumpin. Not to mention all of the helpings of turkey and fine wine.

edge

When Ryan graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with Distinction he immediately applied for and completed his Masters of Science in Physical Therapy in 2015. He has practiced in west, southwest and now east Edmonton since his graduatiation and has strong community ties, having been born and raised in Edmonton (do not bring up Calgary or the Flames).  He has also completed his Acupuncture Certificate through Acupuncture Canada and is Gunn IMS Certified.  Ryan is currently completing Level II coursework through the Orthopedic Division of the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and utilizes his post-graduate training for the care of his patients’ sports injuries, acute and chronic pain. He is an avid hockey player, snowboarder, biker, cross country skier and golfer, and loves to help his clients with injuries preventing them from participating in sports.

Patients are often surprised to find out that following the immobilization period after a surgery or broken bone that their body part is nowhere near “normal.” For several reasons removing the cast, sling or stitches is not an instant fix, there are many steps in between that need to be followed to ensure an optimal and complete recovery.
